On 20 May 2026, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) convened its duly constituted National Convention and Presidential Primary Election to elect the Party's Presidential Candidate for the forthcoming General Elections.
The Presidential Primary was conducted in accordance with the Constitution of the Social Democratic Party, the Electoral Act, and all applicable regulations and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
At the Convention, Mr. Abimbola Akeem Atanda, a distinguished leader of the Party renowned for his strategic leadership, unwavering commitment, and strong grassroots support, emerged as the sole nominated aspirant for the office of President.
Following the nomination process, delegates accredited for the Presidential Primary unanimously endorsed his candidature through a collective "YES" vote, resulting in his election as the Presidential Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the forthcoming General Elections.
The election reflected the overwhelming confidence of Party delegates in his leadership, vision, and capacity to lead the Party to electoral success.
